Training › Information about the railway train driver course

Continental Rail started a Licence and Driving Diploma course on 16 March 2026.

Registration is now closed.

The course comprises a total of 1,150 hours, split into theory and practice: 650 and 500 hours respectively for each module.
The theory training runs approximately from 16 March 2026 to 28 August 2026, in an accredited classroom in central Madrid, from 08:00 to 14:30 Monday to Friday on working days.
The theory training ends with a theoretical knowledge test, which, once passed, gives access to the practical module.

The practical training consists of driving and practical knowledge of infrastructure, stations and rolling stock. It is scheduled giving the student the option to choose a city among Continental Rail’s usual bases as a residence for the driving practice. We expect the practical training to take place between 1 September 2026 and 31 January 2027.

Once all the coursework is completed, the student earns the right to sit the official AESF exam (Ministry of Development) to obtain the Licence and Diploma of railway train driver. The AESF currently offers two exam sittings for train drivers, in February and September. The course is designed so that participating students sit the official February session.

Having obtained these qualifications, the student may choose to join any Railway Undertaking that requires their skills.
The student is responsible for all accommodation, subsistence and travel expenses incurred during the theory and practical training.

Requirements for joining the course (all regulated by Order FOM 2872/2010):

  • Be over 20 years old at the time of sitting the official AESF exam. Send a clear photograph of the complete ID document on both sides.
  • Hold the minimum qualifications of a Baccalaureate certificate or Vocational Training Technician or equivalent studies. Send a clear photograph of the complete certificate on both sides.
  • Spanish as a native language, or a certificate attesting to a B1 level of Spanish for foreigners from non-Spanish-speaking countries.
  • Present a valid Level 1 Psychophysical Aptitude Certificate (CAP), issued by a Medical Centre accredited by the Railway Safety Agency (AESF). Send a clear photograph of the certificate obtained with a «Fit» result. *List of accredited medical centres: https://www.seguridadferroviaria.es/agentessector-ferroviario/Centros-medicos-homologados
  • Send the completed Registration document. Please download the document from the «Registration Form» link below.
  • Proof of payment of 10% of the total course fee. The amount of 1,000 euros, 10% of the total, is required to complete the enrolment. The instructions for making the payment can be found in the «Registration Form» (yellow link below).

Enrolment in the course must be formalised before 20 February 2026.

We recommend that all interested applicants request an appointment at an accredited Medical Centre to obtain the Level 1 Psychophysical Certificate with a FIT result, well before the end of the enrolment process. From the appointment to the result of the medical tests, a week may pass before the certificate is available.

According to the payment instructions specified in the «Registration Form», the total course price is 10,000 euros. The 1st enrolment payment, which is 10% of the total: 1,000 €, is made by 20 February 2026. The 2nd course payment, which is 90% of the total: 9,000 €, is made before 2 March 2026.

The course has a limited number of 30 places; if registrations exceed the number of places, a general knowledge test will be held to award places based on the results obtained in that test.

Continental Rail Formación reserves the right to delay the start of the course or even cancel it depending on the existing student demand. In that case, any student who has enrolled in the course will be informed as soon as possible and the enrolment fee immediately refunded if it has already been paid.
